택배기사로 일하는 타이거(타이거 후 첸)는 링쿵 태극권의 유일한 계승자이다. 그는 태극권이 단지 보여주기 위한 무술이 아니라는 것을 알리기 위해 무술 대회에 참가하고, 새로운 다크호스로 떠오른다. 그 모습을 지켜본 도나카 마크(키아누 리브스)는 타이거에게 파이터가 되어줄 것을 제안한다. 도나카는 대부호들을 대상으로 한 거대 보안회사 대표지만 실제로는 불법적으로 운영되는 언더그라운드 파이트 클럽의 대표다. 경찰의 눈을 피해 심판도 규칙도 없는 무차별한 대결은 비밀리에 계속되고 파이터들은 죽어나가고 있었던 것이다. 그 때 600년을 이어오던 태극권 사찰이 개발자들의 탄원으로 철거 위기에 놓이고, 돈이 필요한 타이거는 도나카의 제안을 받아들인다. 파이터가 된 타이거는 점점 잔인한 싸움꾼이 되어가고 자신이 지키고자 했던 태극권도 위기에 처하는데….

탄지신공이라는 절기의 소유자인 협객 초류향은 세 명의 여사제 용용, 홍수, 점아와 함께 사부의 명으로 소림에 있는 소실봉으로 향한다. 10년 전 초류향의 사부 독고구패와 무상대사는 소실봉에서 비무를 벌였으며 이제 무상대사의 제자인 무화와 초류향이 사부들의 뒤를 이어 승부를 가리려 하는 것이다. 두 사람의 무공은 막상막하였으나 초류향이 간발의 차로 승리를 거두고, 강호에 초류향의 명성이 널리 퍼지는 가운데 그는 무화와 사랑에 빠진다.그러나 강호를 지배하려는 편복공자라는 자가 초류향을 기습하여 중상을 입히고, 초류향은 사부의 희생으로 겨우 목숨을 건진다. 편복공자의 한빙장에 중상을 입고 무공을 잃은 초류향은 무화의 도움으로 강호를 떠나 신수궁으로 간다. 신수궁주 수모음희 덕분에 무공을 되찾은 초류향은 그곳까지 뒤쫓아온 편복공자를 맞아 일생일대의 격전을 벌인다.

제이크는 형이 방콕에서 킥복싱 챔피언 타이틀을 획득하고 돌아오던 도중 칸에게 죽음을 당하자, 어른이 된 후 뉴욕의 민완 형사가 되어 가차없이 깡패들을 응징한다. 형의 죽음에 대한 보복 심리를 가진 제이크의 과거를 알 리 없는 상관은 태국에서의 수사요원으로 제이크를 추천한다. 국제경찰이 요청한 이번 사건은, 태국에서 제작되는 것으로 믿어지는 살인 게임을 담은 불법 액션 영화의 제작 활동을 막는 것이다. 또한 그들은 제이크에게 주모자를 체포할 것도 명령한다. 수사를 위해 제이크는 킥복서로 위장해서 방콕으로 들어간다. 여기서 그는 그 불법 영화의 출연자가 칸임을 알고 그를 이길 수 있는 사부 프랭을 만나 모진 훈련을 연마한다. 그리고 촬영지에 끌려왔다가 도망친 몰리라는 여자와 사랑에도 빠진다. 드디어 제이크는 그의 형을 죽인 칸과의 대결로 살인 게임 작품에 출연하게 된다. 제이크와 칸은 숙명적인 대결을 벌이고 전세는 역전되어 제이크는 칸을 죽이고 형의 죽음에 복수를 한다.
