The Unemployment Club (2001)

When you read the title ‘Summer on the Balcony’ you probably think it will be a light Berlin summer comedy but it’s not. This film is an intimate study of two women friends who come to each other because of troubles with everyday life and with men and thus try to enjoy a life based on their ideas.

From the youth directed novel of the same name by Greogor Tressnow comes a film by Detlev Buck that is a realistic portrait of life in the section of Berlin called Neukölln. It’s about power and weakness, delinquents and victims, and the difficulties a 15-year-old faces in a poor and criminal environment.

Die Polizistin is a documentary by Andreas Dresen about the life of a young police woman who is faced with the difficulties between her responsibilities at work and her personal responsibilities.

Having first lost his wife then his job as a tweed tailor, Alex Ponttin has devised a novel way to keep himself in touch with society. He admits himself into people's homes, by pretending to be a relative or an official, and persuading his victims to give him a night's free board: He finds at first a lunch at the horrible couple Dumont, where a thief follows him for a robbery. Alex spent an evening in front of TV at Marie, mother of seven children. He runs from Marie to find an evening and a new bed at the home of charming but shy lesbian Caroline and her funny lover Gloria. To save her inheritance, Caroline - accused for her homosexuality by her horrible sister Catherine - tells her aunt Amélie, that Gloria is her secretary and Alex her lover. So Alex has to present himself nude in Caroline's bed. He saves Carolines inheritance. The police officers investigating the case are so terminally stupid that Alex has little chance of being arrested.

미국의 시골 마을. 작가 지망생 찰리(데이비드 쉬머)는 실업 중인 몸. 작품 하나를 끝냈지만 출판사들의 반응은 제로. 그래도 아내인 현지 경찰 페넬로페(나타샤 맥켈혼)는 그런 그를 격려하고 있었다. 그러나 찰리는 IT 관련 회사 콜센터 고객 상당자로 일하기 시작한다. 그는 옆 책상에 앉은 거스(사이먼 페그)와 알게 되지만, 거스의 장난으로 출근 첫날에 고객을 화나게 하면서 즉시 해고되어 회사를 나온다. 책임을 느낀 거스가 뒤쫓아 와서 찰리에게 범죄 계획을 귀띔한다. 그날 밤 퍼브에서 찰리와 만난 거스는 세부 사항을 말한다. 마을에 사는 신부를 협박하는 것이었다. 고객 정보를 보다가 불법 음란 사이트에 자주 접속하는 인물을 발견했는데 가만히 보니 그가 신부였기 때문에 그걸로 거금을 챙길 생각이 들었다. 때마침 뒷자리에서 엿듣고 있던 조시(앨리스 이브)도 참여하게 된다. 그러나 범행 당일 밤, 일은 엉뚱한 방향으로 흘러가면서 잇달아 사망자가 나기 시작하는데...

Follows the lives of an unemployed drunk and his son as they struggle to adapt to each other.

철광 산업이 쇠퇴 일로를 달리게 되면서 실업자가 된 가즈(로버트 칼라일)는 어느날 우연히 여자들만 입장할 수 있는 남자 나체쇼가 성황을 이루는 것을 보고 스트립쇼를 해서 돈을 벌기로 마음 먹는다. 가즈는 친구 데이브와 함께 사교춤 선생인 제럴드를 설득해 멤버로 끌어들이고 체리와 호스는 오디션으로 뽑고, 일자리를 구하지 못해 자살기도를 했던 룸퍼스까지 멤버가 된다. 이들은 폐허가 된 철공소 창고에서 경찰 복장으로 스트립쇼를 연습하다 신고를 받고 달려온 경찰에게 연행됨으로써 졸지에 유명인사가 되어버린다. 많은 우여곡절이 연습 중에 생겨나고 포기하려는 사람도 생겨났지만, 결국은 남자 나체쇼를 하는 바의 운영주인 알란의 제의로 이들은 스트립쇼를 하게 되고, 관중들의 환호를 받는다. 이들은 스트립쇼를 통해 무기력하고 절망적이었던 삶에서 탈출할 수 있는 정신적 힘을 얻은 것이다.

Garvey is a San Francisco pawnshop operator. His unemployed and criminal friends Dillard, Turtle and Weslake, team up with Boardwalk, a local pimp, to burgle Garvey's shop while the owner is out of town. During the elaborate planning process, Dillard falls for a Hispanic woman, the sister of a friend. Boardwalk is assigned to case a local apartment, where he meets and falls for the maid. Amidst all these romantic hijinks, Weslake puts together a burglary plan, which is executed by the makeshift gang.

The Idle Ones is a profile of contemporary affairs - somewhere on the edge of Europe - in a place where unemployment for some young people is fast becoming a way of life. Covering a period of 18 months, the film follows the activities of a group of young men in their 20s who have finished their schooling and stayed in their home village - they loaf about unemployed since they can´t find any work in the remote district. The main characters are more or less idle young fellows whose stories link together and make up the film. Tinged with humour, The Idle Ones is a story about frustrated but vital young people in a period of transition, waiting for something to happen. For some, the waiting is becoming their life.
