Tommy Fawkes wants to be a successful comedian. After his Las Vegas debut is a failure, he returns to Blackpool where his father—also a comedian—started, and where he spent the summers of his childhood.
화니걸은 촌스럽게 생긴 유태계 여인, 화니 브라이스가 자신의 일생을 회상하는 장면에서 시작된다. 전혀 배우감이 아닌 용모에도 불구하고 그녀는 브로드웨이 댄서를 지망한다. 우여곡절 끝에 그녀는 댄스쇼와 롤러스케이트쇼에 출연하지만 실수만 연발한다. 그러나 그녀의 실수가 오히려 관객들의 웃음을 유발하고 화니는 본의 아니게 스타로 부상한다. 그녀는 도박꾼 니키를 만나 사랑에 빠져 결혼까지 하게 되지만 니키는 부인의 지나친 유명세를 괴로워한 나머지 다시 도박에 손을 댄다. 결국 니키는 감옥에 가게 되고 1년 뒤에 화니를 찾아온다. 그러나 니키는 자신이 화니의 장래에 방해가 될 거라고 생각하고 그녀에게 이별을 고한다.
Comedian Cedric the Entertainer uses his considerable appeal to introduce some up-and-coming young stand-up comedians. Cedric himself takes on topics such as Bill Clinton, the death penalty, reality television, fast-food chicken, church etiquette, and much more. The other comedians are a mixed lot: Roland Powell amusingly mocks insecure boyfriends and sings a singles bar pick-up song and Juan Villareal gets some laughs out of food stamps and The Blair Witch Project, while Tony Luewellyn flounders through weak material about Ex-Lax and the war on terror. Then along comes J.J., who gives a surreal spin to roadkill and giving birth to septuplets.

앨 루이스(조지 번스 분)와 윌리 클락(월터 매튜 분)은 이제 기억력도 오락가락하고 거동도 느릿느릿한 백발노인이지만, 과거엔 환상의 보드빌 콤비로 이름을 날린 코미디언이다. 일상에서도 유머와 재치가 넘치는 쟁쟁한 실력파 배우인 그들은 무대에서 티격태격하며 배꼽을 쥐게 하지만 성격이 무척 달라 실제론 사이가 좋지 않다. 앨의 은퇴로 명콤비가 해체되면서 거의 앙숙이 돼 오랜 세월 말도 안 해온 상태. 쇼프로 프로듀서인 윌리의 조카 벤(리차드 벤자민 분)은 특집 방송을 앞두고 두 사람의 재결합을 위해 출연을 적극 제의하지만, 윌리는 앨과의 공동출연이라는 말에 노발대발한다. 벤의 중재로 겨우 재회 겸 리허설 자리를 마련하나, 서로 꼬투리를 물고 트집만 잡다 비위가 뒤틀린다. 벤의 끈질긴 설득으로 두 노배우는 촬영 전 일체 상종 않는 조건하에 출연하기로 한다. 그런데 막상 촬영 당일, 연기 도중 앨은 윌리가 가장 싫어하는 두 가지 행동을 한다. 말하면서 침 세례 퍼붓기와 손가락으로 삿대질하기다. 꼭지가 돌아버린 윌리는 대사를 깡그리 무시하고 그간 마음에 쌓아뒀던 불만을 쏟으며 인신공격에 열을 올리다 심장마비로 쓰러진다. 앨은 미안하고 걱정스런 마음에 윌리의 집에 꽃바구니와 사탕을 계속해 보내면서도 친구의 흥분을 자극할까봐 이름을 안 밝힌다. 시간이 좀 지나 앨이 찾아오자 윌리는 사과하러 온 줄 알고 쾌재를 외친다. 하지만 윌리와 똑같이 옹고집에 자존심 센 앨이 사과할리 만무. 오히려 윌리가 늘 조크를 진지하게 받아들여 병을 자초한 거라고 헐뜯는다. 그러나 퉁명스럽게 굴면서도 속으론 화해를 나누고, 내내 옥신각신하지만 주고받는 담화에서 끈끈한 정이 느껴진다.
