Badluck is a man with the head of a fish (this is a play on words in French between « poisse » – bad luck and « poisson » – fish). Bubbles of bad luck come out of his mouth. When one of the bubbles follows somebody, it throws a spell on that person. And the victim is sent into a tailspin of misery and bad luck where the worst that can possibly happen always does, right up until death, in the most incredible circumstances (but meaningless for the other protagonists) ends his or her cycle of bad luck. 세계 최고의 조종 실력을 지닌 전투기 조종사 토퍼 할리(Topper Harley: 찰리 쉰 분)는 고집스러운 성격으로 해군 비행단에서 쫓겨난 후 인디언 부락에 살고 있다가 해군의 요청으로 다시 비행단에 들어와 비밀작전에 참가한다. 토퍼는 부친 버즈(Buzz Harley: 빌 어윈 분)가 20여년전 뛰어난 조종사 였으면서도 장난이 심하고 불운이 따라다니는 인물이어서 다른 조종사를 죽게 했다는 사실이 항상 마음에 걸려 부친 얘기만 나오면 성격이 거칠어 지는 과민반응을 보인다. 토퍼는 미모의 정신과 여의사 라마다(Ramada Thompson: 발레리아 골리노 분)를 두고 같은 엘리트 조종사인 켄트(Kent Gregory: 칼 엘위스 분)와 경쟁을 벌이기도 한다. 아버지의 망상 때문에 좌절을 겪기도 했던 토퍼는 라마다의 설득으로 작전에 참가, 대단한 공을 세운다. 블락 중령(Lt. Commander Block: 케빈 던 분)은 20여년전 토퍼의 부친 버즈에 대한 나쁜 비평은 버즈를 시기하여 자신이 꾸며낸 일이라고 자백하여 토퍼의 정신적 부담을 덜어주고 토퍼는 라마다와 가벼운 마음으로 재회한다

Emil Svensson lives with his mother and father, little sister Ida, farmhand Alfred, and maid Lina on a picturesque farm in Småland. He is an unusually lively little boy, who just can't resist trying out every whim that enters into his white-haired head. Always with the best intentions in mind, because he is a good-hearted child, but often with catastrophic results, especially for his short-tempered father. As a result, Emil spends a lot of quality time in the wood shed carving wood figurines and waiting for Anton's temper to cool down. And the father's patience is certainly tried, as Emil gets his head stuck in the family's only soup bowl, hoists little Ida up the flag pole, and arranges a lavish Christmas party for the poor.

버질은 자동 판매기를 터는데서부터 그의 범죄 인생을 시작한다. 그의 부모님은 이웃들이 알아보지 못하도록 콧수염과 가짜 코가 달린 안경을 쓰고 나와 비뚤어진 아들에 대해 이야기한다. 버질은 장갑차를 훔치려다가 교도소에 가게 된다. 교도소에 나오는 죄수들은 우리가 비슷한 범죄 영화에서 늘 보아오던 전형적인 인물들이다. 버질은 비누를 총모양으로 깍아 도망치려다 실패하고, 형량만 2년이 더 늘어난다. 버질은 나가기 위해 의학 실험용으로 자원하고 결국 가석방되게 된다. 다시 바깥 세상에 나온 그는 바르게 살려고 하나 범죄 욕구가 너무나 강하게 그를 끌었다. 그는 아름다운 세탁 부인 마골린의 지갑을 털려는 계획을 세운다. 그러나 그는 그녀와 사랑에 빠지게 된다. 이제 사랑에 빠진 그는 돈이 필요하게 되고, 은행을 털 계획을 세운 그는 은행에 가서 은행원에게 갈겨쓴 종이를 건넨다. 버질과 은행원간에 논쟁이 벌어진다. 은행원은 그가 갈겨 쓴 글을 읽을 수가 없었기 때문이다. 결국 그는 다시 감옥에 가게 된다. 마골린은 그의 용기를 북돋우기 위해 그에게 정기적으로 면회간다. 실수로 버질은 감옥에서 나오게 되고 마골린과 함께 다른 주로 간 그는 사무실을 차리고 범죄 일생을 마감하려 한다. 그런데 하이디라는 그의 동료가 그의 과거를 알고 그를 협박한다. 버질은 달구어진 막대기로 그녀를 찔러 죽여 보복하려고 준비한다. 마골린이 임신을 하게 되어 돈이 필요하게 된 버질은 다시 은행을 털려다 실패하고 감옥에 간다. 그곳에서 다섯명의 다른 기결수와 탈옥한 그는 농장에 침입한다. 버질은 일급 지명 수배자가 되고 다시 감옥에 간다. 버질은 감옥에서 비누를 깍으며 그의 범죄 일생을 되돌아본다.

한쪽 눈을 실명해서 유명세를 뒤로하고 은반을 떠났던 덕 도로시(Doug Dorsey: D.B. 스위니 분)에게 어느날 재기의 기회가 주어진다. 피겨 스케이팅 전미 챔피언 케이트 모슬리(Kate Mosley: 모이라 켈리 분)와 한팀이 되어 아이스하키 대신 피겨 스케이팅으로 은반 위에 다시 서게 된 것이다. 케이트 또한 자신의 실수로 올림픽 메달 획득에 실패한 후 새로운 파트너를 만나 새 출발의 계기로 삼고자 한다. 처음 두 사람은 사사건건 말다툼을 하지만 그들의 코치 안톤 팜첸코((Anton: 로이 도트라이스 분)의 정열적인 지도와 피나는 노력으로 조금씩 한팀으로 호흡을 맞춰간다. 심판의 편파적 판정에도 불구하고 올림픽 출전권을 따낸 이들에게 코치는 비장의 기술인 팜윈코 트위스트를 전수하지만, 어느덧 두 사람은 서로에 대한 싹트는 감정과 이로 인한 질투로 인해 고난도 기술은 여러 문제점이 드러난다. 하지만 출전 직전 두 사람은 서로 사랑을 고백하고, 격려하며 올림픽 메달에 도전한다.
