뉴욕 경찰청의 노련한 형사 댄 멀둔은 미모의 젊은 여성이 의문스럽게 살해된 사건의 조사에 나선다. 그보다 나이가 젊은 형사 지미 홀로란과 파트너로 나선 멀둔은 두 명의 용의자를 찾아낸다. 하나는 방탕한 부잣집 아들 프랭크 나일즈, 다른 하나는 무식하고 힘만 센 가자라는 인물. 두 사람은 특별한 동기 없이 단순한 스릴을 위해 여자를 죽인 것이다. 다큐멘터리적인 수법을 채택해 관객들에게 마치 실제의 범죄현장에 입회한 듯한 인상을 주어서 높은 평가를 받았던 작품이다.

비행선 엔지니어인 그래함 도링톤 박사는 그가 특별히 고안한 헬륨 비행선을 가이아나 중심부에 있는 거대한 카이초 폭포 근처에서 실험 비행하려 한다. 그러나 12년 전 그는 유사한 탐험 중 동료 디에터를 죽음으로 몰고 갔기 때문에 닥쳐 올 위험이 두렵다. 도링톤 역시 아귀레와 피츠카랄도처럼 헤어조크적 ‘몽상가’이다. 비행선의 테스트를 혼자서 강행하겠다는 도링톤에게 카메라 없는 비행은 어리석은 짓이라며 두 명의 카메라맨이 있음에도 불구하고 자신이 직접 카메라를 메고 비행을 해야겠다고 고집피우는 62세의 헤어조크 감독을 보는 그 자체가 경이롭기 그지없다. The story of the Avro Arrow, the world's fastest fighter plane built in 1950's Canada, and how the project was dropped due to political pressure from the United States.

When an in-flight collision incapacitates the pilots of an airplane bound for Los Angeles, stewardess Nancy Pryor is forced to take over the controls. From the ground, her boyfriend Alan Murdock, a retired test pilot, tries to talk her through piloting and landing the 747 aircraft. Worse yet, the anxious passengers — among which are a noisy nun and a cranky man — are aggravating the already tense atmosphere.

1941년 7월 19일 미육군 항공대는 미군 역사상 최초의 흑인조종사 선발을 시작한다. 엘리베마 주 터스키지 대학 항공학부 시설에서 기본 비행훈련을 실시하고 인근 터스키지 육군비행장에서 고등비행훈련과 전투훈련을 실시한다. 종전까지 터스키지에서는 992명의 흑인조종사가 양성되어 450명이 해외에 참전한다. 이들은 총 1,500회 이상 출격하여 적기 111대 격추 및 150대 지상격파를 하였다. 그외에 기관차 57대, 화차 50대, 구축함 1대, 레이더기지 1곳, 차량 6대, 포좌 3개 등을 파괴하는 전적을 세우고 150명의 흑인조종사가 훈련 또는 전투 중 전사하였다.

경마로 인해 빚더미에 올라 앉은 전직 비행기 조종사 노아(Noah Dugan: 엘리어트 굴드 분)는 빚을 갚기 위해 남태평양의 외딴 섬으로 선교를 떠나는 버니 일행을 낡은 B-29에 태우고 남태평양으로 향한다. 그러나 비행 도중 폭풍우에 휩싸여 무인도에 불시착하게 되고 설상가상으로 아직 전쟁이 끝난지도 모르던 일본군과 맞닥뜨리게 된다. 갖은 우여곡절 끝에 서로 간의 오해를 풀고 합심하여 섬을 떠나는 작업을 벌이게 되고 B-29를 개조하여 배로 만드는 작업 속에서 노아와 버니는 사랑을 시작한다. 결국 섬이 폭파직전 탈출한 일행들은 노아의 방주라 명명한 개조된 배를 타고 끝없는 망망대해 속에서 자연과 사투를 펼치며 서로가 하나로 뭉쳐 세상을 향해 나아간다.

Mitchell learns from his boss, Reg Conway, that if Ashmore does not recommend the plane, the company will be out of business and Mitchell out of a job, since the plane is not even insured as the firm's entire capital is tied up in the plane. Aloft, an engine catches fire and the passengers and other crew bail out, but Mitchell refuses to obey orders to jettison the plane in the Irish Sea.
