아버지와 단둘이 살던 코니(Connie: 릭 레이크 분)는 19살이 되자 집을 떠나 무작정 뉴욕으로 향한다. 대도시에 도착한 바로 그날 코니는 스티브(Steve DeCunzo: 로렌 던 분)라는 건달을 만난다. 순진한 코니는 그의 친절함에 이끌려 그와 동거를 시작한다. 그러나 코니가 임신을 하자 그녀에 대한 애정에 전혀 없던 스티브와의 관계는 끝나고 코니는 혼자가 된다. 레스토랑에서 일하면서 생활하던 그녀는 점점 배가 불러오자 일자리마저 잃고 거리를 배회하는 처지가 된다. 그녀는 어느날 우연히 기차를 타게 되고 그곳에서 친절한 부부를 만난다. 부부는 그녀를 자신들 객실로 데려와 편히 쉬게 해준다. 부인의 이름은 페트리샤 윈터본(Patricia Winterbourne: 릭 레이크 분). 그녀 역시 임신 중이었다. 코니는 자신과는 비교도 안될만큼 아름답고 여유있는 그녀의 모습에 참담한 기분을 느낀다. 페트리샤의 손에는 눈부신 결혼반지가 끼어져 있었다. 그녀는 코니에게 기꺼이 끼어 보라며 반지를 빼준다. 반지를 끼어보는 코니. 바로 그순간, 갑자기 기차가 흔들리고 코니는 정신을 잃는다. 얼마인지 눈을 떠보니 코니는 병실에 있는 자신을 발견한다. 그리고 무사히 살아있는 아기를 만난다. 아기를 보며 행복해하던 코니는 아기 손목에 있는 같은 이름표를 발견한다. 그리고 자신의 손목에도 같은 이름표가 붙어있고, 손에는 페트리샤의 반지가 끼어져 있는데...
