Angelique (1964)

Likely in June 1897, a group of people are standing along the platform of a railway station in La Ciotat, waiting for a train. One is seen coming, at some distance, and eventually stops at the platform. Doors of the railway-cars open and attendants help passengers off and on. Popular legend has it that, when this film was shown, the first-night audience fled the café in terror, fearing being run over by the "approaching" train. This legend has since been identified as promotional embellishment, though there is evidence to suggest that people were astounded at the capabilities of the Lumières' cinématographe.

Caroline is to be wed to Sir Ralph and invites her sister Barbara to be her bridesmaid. Barbara seduces Ralph, however, and she becomes the new Lady, but despite her new wealthy situation, she gets bored and turns to highway robbery for thrills. This historical film by Hynek Bočan touches upon the indecisiveness of the Czech nation, ready to bend the backbone in face of foreign rule. Situating the story at the close of the Thirty Year War enabled the depiction of the misery of the people that affects even an impoverished aristocratic milieu. Rudolf Hrušínský appears here in the role of an indecisive knight, persuaded for a long time and in vain to join the anti-Habsburg movement. The story does not only captivate through the depiction of manifold human characters, intrigues and sycophancy, but also through the circumstances ruling over the devastated farmstead, sunk in mud and crudeness. One of the best films with an updating tendency has come into being here, rightly being named along the such greats as Kladivo na čarodějnice (Witches' Hammer).

In a cold French city where suicide is a common urge, there is a colorful shop, managed for many years by the Tuvache family, where it is very easy to obtain the necessary tools to satisfy the sinister desires of so many depressed citizens.

However, what they didn't realize was that the handsome Persian was in fact a sexual sadist. So, it is up to the King's half- brother, some Hungarian prince, to save Angélique from the evil troll's clutches.

Angelique is saved by the king of the cutthroats when she is endangered in the streets of Paris. After her hero is killed, she has many amorous affairs and becomes a successful businesswoman.

Angelique goes in search of her husband Joffrey de Peyrac who did not die on the stake.

This film finds Angélique in a North African Muslim kingdom where she is now part of the Sultan's harem. The first part of the film consist of her angrily refusing to be bedded as well as their trying to literally beat some sense into her. It all seems to go on too long and I was surprised that the Sultan simply didn't have her killed. Late in the film, she finally decides to escape with the help of two Christian prisoners.

This film originated as a play in Paris. The story focuses on the one-day adventures of Bertrand Barnier played with a genius of French cinema, Louis de Funes. In the same morning he learns that his daughter is pregnant, an employee stole a large amount of money from his company, his maid is about to resign in order to marry a wealthy neighbor and his body builder is interested in marrying his daughter. The seemingly complicated story-line is full of comedy or errors and some of the most hilarious mime scenes of the French cinema.

자신이 백인이고 천주교인임을 자랑스럽게 생각하고 그외의 다른 사람들에 대해서 지독한 편견을 갖고 있는 피베르는 차를 타고 여행에서 돌아오던 중 교통사고를 당해 차와 같이 물에 빠지게 된다. 유태인 기사는 안식일이라 일을 할 수 없다고 떠나고, 밤이 되어 그는 혼자 먼 곳의 불빛을 찾아 어느 공장으로 들어간다. 그곳에서 어떤 독재 아랍공화국인들이 슬리만이라는 쿠테타 음모자를 묶어 놓고는 심문하는 광경을 목격하는데 그것 때문에 결국 슬리만과 함께 쫓기는 처지가 된다. 그러다가 그들은 우연히 미국 뉴욕에서 파리에 다니러 온 야곱이라는 유태인 랍비와 그의 보조 랍비인 샤뮤엘의 옷을 빌려입고 유태인 구역으로 간다. 야곱 랍비를 기다리고 있던 유태인들은 피베르를 의심없이 야곱 랍비로 알고 열렬히 환영한다. 유태교에 대해서 아무것도 모르는 그가 랍비 행세를 하자니 여간 고충이 아닌데 마침 그의 유태인 기사가 나타나 그를 도와준다. 그러는 사이에 독재정권에 항거하는 슬리만의 쿠테타가 성공해서 슬리만은 대통령으로 추대된다. 피베르는 자신의 딸과 첫눈에 사랑을 느낀 슬리만을 주저없이 사위로 맞아 드린다. 그동안의 작은 모험들이 유태인과 유색인종에 대한 그의 편견을 깨트리는 것이다.
