인종과 국적, 성별과 종교, 부자와 가난한 자. 세상의 사람들을 가르는 온갖 차이를 넘어서서, 전 세계인에게 ‘마더’로 불렸던 가난한 자들의 어머니 ‘마더 데레사’ 그녀의 사후에 공개된, 마더 데레사가 사제들에게 50여 년 간 써 내려간 편지들은 우리가 기억하는 살아있는 성자가 아니라, 조국 알바니아를 떠나 인도 콜카타에서 길 위에서 태어나고 죽는 가난한 자들의 어머니로 거듭나기까지 마더 데레사가 겪어야 했던 외로움과 고통, 영적 갈등과 하느님에 대한 목마름을 보여준다. 수녀원 밖으로 나갈 수 없다는 봉쇄 규정과 가톨릭의 도움을 거부하는 힌두와 무슬림의 탄압과 반대 등 현실의 어려움과 맞서 사랑의 선교회를 만들기까지. 가난한 자들과 함께 하라는 신의 목소리를 들은 후, 고통이 있는 곳이면 그 어디든 달려갔던 마더 데레사의 진솔한 목소리가 우리를 찾아온다.

1964년 아일랜드의 시골마을, 네 명의 여성이 교회와 가족으로부터 버림받고 잔혹하고 비인간적인 막달레나 수녀원으로 보내진다. 그곳에서 그들은 자신의 죄를 참회할 것을 강요 당한다. 하지만 그들의 죄라는 것은 미혼모거나 너무 예쁘거나 못생겼다는 것, 너무 똑똑하거나 멍청하다는 것, 순결을 잃어버린 강간의 희생자라는 어불성설의 것들이다. 그들은 죄 값을 치러야 한다는 이유만으로 비인간적이며 부당한 노동을 강요 당한다. 소녀들은 재치를 발휘하여 위협으로부터 잠시 벗어나지만, 과연 노예와 별반 다르지 않은 상황에서 모든 것을 이겨낼 수 있을지는 의문이다. 분노와 절망 속에서 그들은 마침내 탈출을 꿈꾼다.

2010년 12월 튀니지에서 촉발한 '아랍의 봄'은 북아프리카와 중동 지역에 민주화 바람을 일으켰다. 그 바람은 시리아까지 이어졌고 시민들은 반정부 평화 시위에 나섰다. 시리아 정부는 강경 대응했고 내전으로 번졌다. 고대 메소포타미아 문명을 간직한 시리아는 잿더미가 되었다. 시민은 난민이 되어 세계 각지로 흩어졌다. (제9회 디아스포라 영화제)

본래 캐시 제이는 페미니스트 였으며 원래는 남성인권단체를 비판할 목적으로 그들과 인터뷰했으나, 하지만 캐시 제이의 생각과 달리 남성인권단체가 주장하는 것들이 정말 옳다고 생각하여서 아예 남성인권 다큐멘터리를 제작하게 되었으며 그 과정에서 캐시 제이는 페미니스트를 관두기를 선언했다. 이름의 유래는 역시 1번의 매트릭스의 빨간약에서 따온 개념으로, 캐시 제이가 그간 가지고있던 남성은 항상 권력자의 위치에 있으며 혐오, 차별의 대상이 될 수 없다고 믿어왔던 기존의 페미니스트로써의 신념을 버리고 남성인권에도 관심을 가지게 되었다는 의미이다. 당연하지만 미국의 여성인권단체의 각종 항의로 인해서 몇번 극장에서 상영취소가 되기도 하였다.

Inspired by a true story, this drama is set in 1965, not long after passage of the Civil Rights Act. Despite the Act, the African-American citizens of Bogalusa are still treated like third-class citizens, their fundamental rights as human beings persistently trampled by the white power structure, in general, and the local branch of the KKK. The story follows the formation of local black men, particularly ex-war veterans who after the struggles become too overbearing organizes the group, "Deacons for defense", an all-black defense group dedicated to patrolling the black section of town and protecting its residents from the more violent aspects of "white backlash."
