영국 왕립 미술관(Royal National Gallery, London) 최악의 직원 빈(Mr. Bean: 로완 아킨슨 분)이 하는 일이란 기껏 한쪽 구석에 앉아 졸거나 빈둥돼는 것이 전부다. 하지만 모두가 꺼려하는 빈을 유독 왕립 미술관 회장만이 전폭적으로 지지하고 있다. 언제나 그렇듯 왕립 미술관 이사회의 가장 중요한 안건은 천하의 사고뭉치 빈을 쫓아내는 것. 그러던 어느날, 빈을 사라지게 할 호재가 생겼다. 미국 최고의 걸작 '휘슬러의 어머니'의 본국 송환에 앞서 그리어슨 미술관(Grierson Art Gallery, Los Angeles)은 대대적인 기념 행사를 계획한다. 그 일환으로 영국 왕립 미술관에 저명한 박사를 초청한 것이다. 이사회는 빈을 대신 보내기로 결정하고, 빈은 열렬한 환성을 받으며 미국으로 향한다. 하지만 빈은 처음 도착한 공항에서부터 불법 총기 소지자로 오인받아 공항을 아수라장으로 만든다. 이제 그가 지나는 곳은 모두가 혼돈과 무질서의 세계로 뒤덮히기 시작한다. 한편, 영문도 모르는 채 빈을 최고의 미술학자로 오인한 그리어슨 미술관측은 소수의 관계자들만이 모인 자리에서 '휘슬러의 어머니'를 최초로 공개한다. 모두가 잠시 자리를 뜬 사이, 빈과 '휘슬러의 어머니'의 너무도 끔찍한 악연이 시작되는데.

프랑스 소설가 발자크의 소설 에서 영감을 얻어 제작한 작품으로 그 내용의 줄거리가 거의 흡사하다. 줄거리 자체만으로는 단순하며 상투적인 모습을 보여주지만 쟈끄 리베트 감독의 손을 거쳐서 탄생한 은 예술작품에 대한 감독의 실험정신을 영화 속 주인공 프뤼노페르를 통해 재현하는 작품이다. 주인공 프뤼노페르는 10년 전 아내인 리즈(제인 버킨 분)를 모델로 그리다가 실패하고 만 미완의 그림 '미녀 싸움꾼 (La Belle Noiseuse)'을 다시 그리는 작업을 시작하게 된다. 새로운 모델은 그를 찾아온 젊은 화가 니꼴라의 여자친구인 마리안느(엠마뉴엘 베아르 분)가 되며, 이 작업은 화가와 모델의 끊임없는 자아찾기와 작품에 대한 열망, 그와 연결된 인물들 사이의 관계와 설정이 어떻게 변화되어 가는지를 섬세하게 표현해 낸다.

1944년 8월 연합군의 노르망디 상륙작전 이후 퇴각을 하게 된 독일군은 파리의 한 박물관에 수집, 보관되어 있던 프랑스의 국보급 미술품을 발트하임 대령의 지휘 아래 독일로 이전하기 위한 작업을 한다. 철도원으로서 레지스탕스에 몸담고 있는 철도원 라비쉬는 동료들과는 달리 미술품의 보호에 대해 부정적인 견해를 지니고 있었다. 이미 철도원들에는 기차에 실린 물건이 무엇인지 공공연히 알려진 상태에서 비조직적인 저지가 이루어진다. 파리의 베어 역을 출발한 기차는 한 구간을 달려 라인강역에 도착하여 오일관 고장으로 멈춰 서게 된다. 고의로 기차의 오일관에 손상을 주어 기차를 파손한 빠빠부는 독일군 장교 헤른 소령에게 이 사실이 들통이 나면서 현장에서 사형이 집행이 되고 이를 저지하던 라비쉬는 기차의 수리와 운행을 강요받게 된다. 본 발트하임 대령은 라비쉬로 하여금 독일국경 근처의 역인 세인트 어폴트 역까지 운행할 것을 명령하는데...

Balkan Baroque is a real and imaginary biography of the Yugoslavian performance artist Marina Abramovic. Rather than a mechanical reproduction of the artist's work, the film tries to create a new reality by translating the performances into cinematographic images that intensify the fictional context of the film. Abramovic plays herself, but ,appearing in multiple forms, blurs her own identity. Memories and fantasies intermingle with day to day rituals. The chronological narrative often breaks to reflect the interior voyage of the protagonist from the present to the past and back to the present. The result is a visually impressive film. Balkan Baroque had its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, 1999.
