과대한 상상력 때문에 한 직장에 오래 붙어 있질 못하는 수다장이 죠지(George Newman: 웨어드 얀코빅 분). 이번엔 하나밖에 없는 친구 봅(Bob: 데이빗 보우 분)까지 쫓겨나게 만든다. 삼촌 하비(Uncle Harvey: 스탠리 브록 분)의 배려로 U.H.F. 62 방송국의 매니저 자리를 얻게 된 죠지는 당장 봅을 채용하고 획기적인 프로그램을 만들기 위해 고심한다. 현재 시청율 1위인 채널 6에서 쫓겨난 청소부 스탠리(Stanley Spadowski: 마이클 리차드 분)를 관리인으로 영입하고 몇 안되는 전직원이 최선을 다했지만 시청율은 최하위로 떨어진다. 자포자기의 기분으로 스탠리에게 어린이 프로를 맡긴 채 술을 마셔대던 죠지와 봅은 스탠이 자신의 이야기로 폭발적인 인기를 얻는 장면을 목격하고는 시청자들이 원하는건 바로 평범한 서민들의 재능과 독창적인 프로라는 사실을 깨닫게 된다. 시청율이 지붕을 뚫을 듯 치솟자 위기를 느낀 채널 6의 사장 RJ(R.J.
