별다른 시설없이 교도소 하나 달랑있는 작은 마을 아티카. 마을의 모든 주민이 교도소와 관련된 일을 하며 살아가고 있다. 평생을 교도관으로 근무하다 퇴직한 뒤 술집을 차린 아버지 뒤를 이어 마이클 스미스(Michael Smith: 카일 맥라클란 분)도 교도소 교도관으로 부임한다. 베트남전 반대를 외치며 히피 생활을 하다가 아내가 임신하자 돈을 벌기위해 교도관이 된 마이클은 근무 첫날부터 제소자의 교정 교화보다는 복지 부동적 자세로 일관하는 선배 교도관들의 태도에 기가 질린다. 생리에 맞진 않지만 적응하려고 나름대로 노력하는데 교도관한테 뜨거운 스프를 끼얹는 사건이 발단이 되어 폭동사태로 번진다. 교도소를 장악한 제소자 중엔 맬콤 엑스를 추종하며 회교를 믿는 아프리카 흑인들이 많았고 이들이 폭동의 주축이 된다. 무장 군경이 몰려와 교도소 담을 에워싸고 진압명령만 기다리는 가운데 사건 해결을 위해 주지사가 파견한 오스왈드 위원(Oswald: 필립 보스코 분)이 도착한다. 협상을 통해 사건을 온건하게 해결해야된다고 하는 오스왈드 위원한테 교도소장 맨쿠시(Mancusi: 카멘 아젠지아노 분)는 일초라도 빨리 무력으로 밀고들어가 교도관을 구하고 교도소를 탈환해야된다고 강력히 반발한다. 한편 미친 듯이 날뛰는 제소자들한테 조직적으로 움직여야 한다며 교도관 폭행을 저지한 자말 엑스(Jamaal: 사무엘 L. 잭슨 분)는 제소자들 중에선 비교적 합리적인 사고를 하는 인격의 소유자다. 자말은 머리를 심하게 다쳐 중태인 윌리스 교도관(Willis: 제프리 포드 분)을 밖으로 내보내고 요구 조건의 전면수용을 주장하며 제소자를 대표하는 변호사를 협상 테이블에 내보낸다. 협상을 질질끄는 동안 마이클의 아내(Sharon: 앤 허쉬 분)와 어버지는 애간장이 탄다. 교도소 밖에서 진압명령이 떨어지기만 기다리는 군경 중엔 예이츠 교도관(Yates: 브루스 에버스 분)처럼 교도관이 다치는 한이 있더라도 빨리 총을 쏘며 들어가 교도소를 탈환해야된다는 강경파와 마이클

2차 세계대전이 끝난 후, 젊은이들은 각자 자신의 길을 찾아 떠나지만 프레디 퀠(호아킨 피닉스)은 여전히 방황하며 백화점의 사진기사로 살아가고 있다. 자신이 제조한 술에 의존하며 살아가고 있는 프레디는 파티장에서 난동을 부리게 되고, 다음날 그 자리에 있었던 랭케스터(필립 세이무어 호프만)를 만나게 된다. 프레디는 인간의 심리를 연구하는 랭케스터의 실험대상이자 조력자, 친구로서 그의 가족들과 함께 머물게 된다. 하지만 프레디는 랭케스터 역시 자신과 다르지 않은 불완전한 인간임을 깨닫고, 랭케스터 역시 가족들로부터 프레디를 멀리하라는 경고를 받는데...

5~6년 전, 콜롬비아 보고타에서 우연히 만난 존(브래드 피트)과 제인(안젤리나 졸리). 살인사건으로 검문당하던 제인은 존의 도움으로 무사히 빠져나가고 둘은 첫눈에 반해 사랑에 빠진다. 완벽한 외모와 성품을 가진 최고의 배우자를 만났다고 기뻐하는 두 사람. 그러나, 그것은 사상 최악의 잘못된 만남이었으니…바로 두 사람은 경쟁조직에 속한 일급킬러들이었던 것이다. 하지만 두 사람은 서로의 정체를 전혀 눈치채지도 못한 채 결혼에 골인한다. 그리고 5~6년 후… 겉보기엔 평온한 부부생활을 즐기는 존과 제인 부부. 매일 저녁 7시엔 꼭 함께 저녁식사를 하고, 정원을 가꾸고, 아침이 되면 나란히 차를 타고 출근한다. 하지만 그들이 회사에서 보내는 하루일과는 암살로 시작해 암살로 끝난다. 때로 야근에 특근도 있고 출장도 잦다. 이처럼 평범치 않은 신분의 존과 제인에게 아주 평범한(?) 위기가 닥친다. 바로 권태기에 빠지게 된 것. 처음 만났을때의 설레임은 도무지 찾아볼수가 없고 섹스도 거의 없는 이 부부는 이 심각한 상황을 벗어나기 위해 상담도 해보지만 별 소용이 없다. 그러던 중 조직으로부터 임무를 부여 받은 두 사람은 암살현장에서 예기치 않은 방해꾼을 발견한다. 그리고 상대를 제거하기 위해 총구를 겨눈 순간, 상대 킬러가 바로 자신의 배우자임을 알게 된다. 이 충격적인 사실로 혼돈스러운 것도 잠시, 임무실패에 대한 책임으로 두 사람은 각각 조직으로부터 48시간 내에 상대 킬러를 죽이라는 명령을 받는다. 이제 어제의 부부가 오늘 적이 되어 수단과 방법을 가리지 않고 서로를 죽이기 위해 쫓고 쫓기는 게임을 시작하는데…
