A fascinating documentary about Johannesburg. It is one of the most violent cities in the world yet the filmmakers bravely probe into some of the most depraved areas of the city that few would have the courage to venture into. This gives fascinating insight as to how Johanneburg has evolved since the end of apartheid and look at the impact the preparation for the FIFA World Cup in 2010 is having on the residents surrounding the stadiums.

Pro football star Jake Walker is living the dream, or so he thinks. While working out at training camp, Jake receives an call from that his father Frank has suffered a major heart attack. Jake immediately leaves practice and returns home to a small town he’s avoided for 15 years. Jake dutifully visits his father, but hurt and misunderstanding from the past begin to resurface. A second unexpected call, this time from his agent, delivers Jake another crushing blow. His contract is not being renewed amid concerns about his surgically repaired knee. Suddenly, the life Jake knows is over.

The people at the centre of this film are lawyers, civil servants, housewives, managing directors and mothers. They are also alcoholics. In her documentary, Carolin Schmitz explores the protagonists’ stories and their strategies for survival: the little tricks they employ in order to try and get through their daily lives – lives which become increasingly difficult to manage the stronger the addiction becomes. Their fear of losing control and being exposed as a drinker create their need to conform, but the protagonists can only cope with this pressure by increasing their alcohol intake.
