어느 담배 회사가 판촉을 목적으로 1달 동안 담배를 피지 않는 도시에 한하여 2500만 달러를 주겠다고 제안한다. 이에 아이오하주의 이글록(Elgle Rock)이라는 작은 마을의 목사인 브룩스는 쇠퇴해져 가는 마을을 발전시키기 위한 기금을 얻기 위해 '콜드 터키'라고 불리는 금연 운동을 펼친다. 이 운동은 곧 여러 사람에게로 퍼지고 곧 실시가 된다. 하지만 하루 하루가 지남에 따라 사람들은 담배를 못피우자 싸움과 신경질이 계속된다. 이에 전문가들은 섹스를 즐기라고 권하기도 하는 헤프닝을 벌인다. 한편 이 마을은 미국 전역에 걸쳐 주목을 받게 되어 유례없는 번화와 유명세를 타면서 금연을 벌이는 도시가 늘어간다. 이에 계획이 틀어지자 초조해진 담배 회사는 이글록에 감시원들을 파견하여 콜드 터키가 성공하지 못하도록 훼방을 놓는다. 1달이 되어가자 이글록의 시위원들은 상금을 둘러싸고 싸우고, 마을 사람들은 이것을 나눠도 각자에게 6천달러가 돌아간다며 아우성이다. 꼭 1달이 되는 자정을 앞두고 마을 사람들은 축제 분위기인 가운데, 회사측에서는 시계탑을 12시로 맞추고 헬기콥터를 동원하여 담배를 마구 뿌려댄다. 담배 생각뿐이던 사람들은 아우성이고, 우여곡절 끝에 자정까지 무사히 보낸다. 콜드 터키 계획은 성공하고, 이날 마을에 대통령까지 방문한다. 그리고 이 마을을 미사일 공장을 건설하겠다고 약속해 마을 사람들의 환호를 받는다. 그후 이 도시의 공장 굴뚝은 담배 연기와 같이 시커먼 연기를 내뿜는다.

가장 지저분한 기사를 싣는 것으로 소문난 스톱 잡지사의 편집장인 밥 웨스톤은 23살의 심리조사학자인 헬렌 브라운 박사에 대한 기사를 실어 히트를 친다. 그 기사로 인해 상담자가 줄어드는 등 많은 피해를 보고 있는 헬렌은 밥에게서 전화가 오자 모욕을 줘서 끊어 버린다. 밥은 스타킹 제조업자인 프랭크가 밤낮 질투 많은 그의 아내 실비아에게 바가지 당하는 것을 보고 프랭크의 결혼 문제 상담도 할겸, 헬렌 박사에게 타격을 줄 새로운 기사거리도 취재할 겸 해서 프랭크로 가장하고 헬렌 박사를 찾아간닫. 하지만 밥은 순진한 헬렌 박사의 인간미와 그녀의 미모에 이글리어 사랑에 빠지고 만다. 또한 아내의 문제를 갖고 고민하는 밥을 상담해주던 헬렌도 그를 점차 사랑하고 있음을 알고는 고민에 빠진다. 밥은 일부러 자살 소동극을 벌여 헬렌도 자기를 사랑하고 있음을 확인한다. 헬렌은 밥의 사랑을 고백하며 자기와 실비아와는 법적인 혼인 관계가 아니라고 얼버무리려고 하자, 실비아를 만나보고 확인을 해보겠다고 한다. 결국, 헬렌의 사무실에는 프랭크의 아내인 진짜 실비아와 만나게 되고 이것을 모르는 밥은 가짜 실비아를 보내 대충 자신의 아내 행세를 한 뒤 자신과 헤어지게 하지만, 엉뚱하게도 가짜 두 명이 나타난다. 결국 실비아는 프랭크가 중혼한 것으로 오해해 감옥에 가두고 프랭크를 출감시켜 달라고 실비아를 찾아갔던 헬렌은 프랭크라고 하며 자기를 찾아왔던 남자가 바로 스톱잡지사의 편집장, 밥 웨스톤임을 알게 된다. 배신감과 실의에 빠진 헬렌은 루디와 함께 피지섬으로 도피하려고 하는데 그 사실을 안 밥은 끝까지 쫓아와 모든 오해를 풀고 헬렌을 되찾는다.

Danish singer Carl Brisson had created a minor sensation by introducing "Cocktails for Two" in Paramount's Murder at the Vanities (34), but the studio's attempts to turn him into a Scandinavian Maurice Chevalier were unsuccessful.
