The Garden (1968)

A ação se passa em Lucknow, capital de Avadh, em cujo trono se senta Nawab Wajid, governante irresponsável, mas um refinado poeta e músico. Na mesma cidade vivem os amigos inseparáveis Mirza e Mir, cuja única ocupação na vida é jogar xadrez. Entretanto, um grande "jogo de xadrez", só que geopolítico, está sendo jogado pela East India Company. O governador-geral inglês Lorde Dalhousie está decidido a usar a negligência de Nawab para fazer da província de Avadh domínio britânico. Mirza e Mir ficam sabendo que tropas a serviço da Coroa Britânica estão se aproximando de Lucknow. Terrivelmente assustados, a dupla se refugia em um vilarejo isolado dos distúrbios políticos para continuar a disputar seus jogos sobre o tabuleiro.

É a história de artaban (Martin Sheen), um médico da antiga Pérsia, que dedicou sua vida à busca do Messias. Procurando nas Sagradas escrituras o significado real da vida, Artaban descobre sobre Jesus, O Rei dos Reis. È então que ele se desfaz de todas as suas posses materiais, compra três pedras preciosas, e inicia uma jornada através do deserto onde deve encontrar-se com outros três Magos e, com eles, ir ao encontro de Jesus. Artaban não chega à tempo de encontrar-se com os Magos. Muitos imprevistos também o impedem de encontrar Jesus antes de sua crucificação… porém, na manhã de Páscoa, uma mensagem divina fará com que artaban compreenda o verdadeiro significado da vida.

Juraj Herz adapts Bohumil Hrabal's story about a man who works in a junk shop.

Detective Lieutenant Boruvka (Lubomír Lipský) is called to the State Scientific Library to investigate the loss of a precious manuscript, the Infernal Psalter of the Occult Sciences by Master Peregrinus from the eleventh century, written in a secret script which has only recently been deciphered by senior lecturer Zajíc (Josef Chvalina). Chaos is reigning in the labyrinth of passages and halls of the former monastery where the library is housed. In order to save space the director of the library has introduced a peculiar system. The books are arranged in the bookcases according to height and six girls dressed in black, the library assistants, are quite happy to cut volumes down to size in case of need. Boruvka refuses the case, since he is specialist in murders. He has to return to the investigation, however, when senior lecturer Zajíc disappears.
