What does being a Jew mean nowadays? Emanuel Goldfarb, a Jewish journalist, is asked by the Director of a Jewish community in Germany, to respond to an invitation by a professor to tell his pupils about his life as a Jew living in Germany. This conversation, performed by Goldfarb and the Director of the community, is the only scene of Oliver Hirschbiegel's film « Ein ganz gewohnlicher Jude » presented at the Film and Television Festival of Genève, which was shot outdoors and it's the only moment where something apparently happens.

Stevie, a precocious 14-year-old girl must cope with the instabilities of her immoderate parents. When they decide to move to a small provincial town in Germany, Stevie attempts to slip into a normal life. Whilst her parents playfully escape their responsibilities, Stevie tries to make a good impression in town, spreading stories of grandeur and claiming to be the daughter of a diplomat. She makes progress. Yet the good weather doesn’t last and before long, she discovers that her parents have once more resorted to illegal means, as a way of supporting their leisurely lifestyle. As friends and hangers-on of her parents fill their new home, the chaos continually mounts. It is in this atmosphere of physical and emotional destruction, that Stevie must now start to define herself and perhaps even break free.

Chris e Gitti estão em um aparente idílio amoroso durante as férias na Sardenha. Porém, em meio às brincadeiras, aos rituais íntimos e aos hábitos fúteis, esconde-se uma tensão. Cheia de entusiasmo, ela não teme expressar o amor que sente por Chris, enquanto ele é mais reservado em relação à exposição de sua vida pessoal e profissional, demonstrando certa insegurança. Numa tola tentativa de viver perigosamente, Chris começa a revelar seu gênio voluntarioso, querendo mostrar à namorada quem domina o relacionamento. Com isso, a confiança que ela depositava nele sofre um duro golpe. Gitti tenta se conformar com o novo comportamento de Chris, mas o que começara como uma experiência lúdica logo se transforma numa luta contra a própria personalidade. Enquanto ele se afirma como o mais forte da relação, ela começa a perder a cabeça.

Vincent, a young man who suffers from Tourette's syndrome, has just lost his mother. His father, a successful politician, does not want to take care of him and therefore places him into a mental institution. He is put into a room with Alexander, a guy with a compulsive disorder, and is shown around by Marie, an anorectic girl.

A narrativa é divida entre três grupos de pessoas: a atriz francesa Anne Laurent (Juliette Binoche), o marido dela e sogros; uma romena, Maria (Luminita Gheorghiu), luta para ter dinheiro para sua família voltar para casa; e Amadou (Ona Lu Yenke), um professor para crianças surdas-mudas que está em conflito com seu clã africano. O catalisador das histórias começa numa esquina, onde o cunhado de Anne, Jean (Alexander Hamidi), insulta Maria, que implora ajuda. Amadou, enraivecido, provoca uma briga com Jean, resultando em repercussões negativas para os três grupos.
