What does being a Jew mean nowadays? Emanuel Goldfarb, a Jewish journalist, is asked by the Director of a Jewish community in Germany, to respond to an invitation by a professor to tell his pupils about his life as a Jew living in Germany. This conversation, performed by Goldfarb and the Director of the community, is the only scene of Oliver Hirschbiegel's film « Ein ganz gewohnlicher Jude » presented at the Film and Television Festival of Genève, which was shot outdoors and it's the only moment where something apparently happens.

Stevie, a precocious 14-year-old girl must cope with the instabilities of her immoderate parents. When they decide to move to a small provincial town in Germany, Stevie attempts to slip into a normal life. Whilst her parents playfully escape their responsibilities, Stevie tries to make a good impression in town, spreading stories of grandeur and claiming to be the daughter of a diplomat. She makes progress. Yet the good weather doesn’t last and before long, she discovers that her parents have once more resorted to illegal means, as a way of supporting their leisurely lifestyle. As friends and hangers-on of her parents fill their new home, the chaos continually mounts. It is in this atmosphere of physical and emotional destruction, that Stevie must now start to define herself and perhaps even break free.

Париж, наше время. Жан приезжает к старшему брату, фотокорреспонденту Жоржу, а тот отправился на очередную войну. Жан знакомится с подругой брата, актрисой Анн, которая недовольна постоянными отлучками Жоржа и решила избавиться от их будущего ребенка. Анн не спешит сообщать Жану новый код от входной двери, и он в расстроенных чувствах устраивает ссору на улице с африканцем Амаду и нелегальной румынской иммигранткой Марией. Прибывшая полиция арестовывает Амаду и депортирует Марию. В один миг неизвестный код роковым образом меняет судьбы людей и завязывает историю, похожую на многоцветье Парижа — города, который задает загадки и не дает ответов.
