Carlo, a young photographer, is making love with his girlfriend at the beach when he witnesses a murder being feebly staged to look like a car accident. Carlo takes incriminating shots of the murderers (the victim turns out to be the local public prosecutor) and attempts to sell them to various interested parties, including a gangster and a newspaper owner. One of the murderers' accomplices, a lowlife criminal, is gunned down by a black-gloved assassin, while another is stabbed to death...
이탈리아 로마에 살고 있는 미국인 작가 샘 달라스는 늦은 밤, 화랑 앞을 지나다 화랑 주인의 아내가 살해당하는 것을 목격한다. 죽어가는 여성은 유리창 너머에 있는 샘에게 도움을 요청하지만 샘은 그녀를 돕지 못한다. 다행히도 여자는 살아 남아 악명 높은 연쇄 살인범의 희생자들 가운데 최초의 생존자가 된다. 샘이 목격한 것은 검은 장갑을 낀 남자였고, 그는 유일한 목격자로서 경찰에게 신변 보호를 받는다. 시간이 흐르는 가운데 샘은 살인 사건의 진범을 알 수 있는 중요한 사실을 뒤늦게 깨닫게 되는데...

8월의 달을 위한 다섯 개의 인형은 너무 많은 것을 아는 여자와 함께 마리오 바바를 대표하는 스릴러다. 아가사 크리스티의 걸작 추리 소설 (국내 제목 '그리고 아무도 없었다')이 원작으로, 등장인물의 수는 줄었지만 내용은 크게 다르지 않다. 배가 아니면 접근이 힘든 해변의 저택에 모인 6인의 남녀가 보이지 않는 살인마에 의해 하나둘 살해당하고 최종적으로 한 명만이 살아남는 것. 에서 지알로 장르를 창조한 마리오 바바는 이 영화에서도 예의 그 장기를 유감없이 발휘한다. 붉은 색을 주조로 한 원색의 저택 인테리어, 여성의 육체를 노골적으로 탐하는 카메라 운용, 핏빛 스타일이라고 해도 좋을 잔인무도한 살해 장면까지, 특히 시체들이 고깃덩이와 함께 냉동고에 대롱대롱 매달린 장면은 희생자의 고통을 즐기려는 듯한 마리오 바바의 악취미적 연출이 절로 묻어난다. 의 악당 리더를 연기한 모리스 폴리가 살해당하는 남자 중 한 명으로 출연한다.
