면도칼의 모서리 (1984)

예수를 닮은 한 사내. 이름 모를 기이하고도 그로테스크한 곳에 떨어졌다. 그는 벌거벗은 채로 난쟁이를 따라 얽히고 설킨 ‘세상’에 조금씩 눈을 뜨게 되고, 복잡한 세상을 정신없이 헤매던 그는 기묘한 여정에 들어서게 된다. 우선 사내는 우연히 신비의 지도자를 만나게 된다. 지도자를 통해 ‘연금술’의 능력을 배우면서 인정을 받게 된 그는 세상에서 가장 부유하고 영향력 있는 7명의 인물을 만난다. 이 7명의 인물들은 태양계의 행성들을 각각 수호하고 있다. 이후 예수를 닮은 사내와 지도자, 7명의 수행원들은 속세의 물건을 모두 버리고 신의 일을 대신하고 있는 불사의 현자들을 찾아 성스러운 산으로 길을 나선다. 그들이 성스러운 산을 오르기까지 과연 어떤 놀랄만한 사건들이 그들을 엄습해 올 것인가. 성스러운 산에 올라 깨달음을 얻기까지의 과정은 절대 쉽지 않다.

건축가인 딘(Dean Conrad: 크리스 이삭 분)의 집으로 어느 날 노부(Lama Norbu: 루오쳉 잉 분)라고 하는 티벳 승려가 찾아와 딘의 아들 제시(Jesse Conrad: 알렉스 위젠댄거 분)가 자신의 스승인 도제 스님(Lama Dorje: Ven. Geshe Tsultim Gyelsen 분)으로 환생한 아이일지도 모른다며, 제시를 부탄으로 데려가 환생 여부를 확인하게 해달라고 한다. 딘과 아내 리사(Lisa Conrad: 브리짓 폰다 분)는 인간이 환생한다는 말을 믿지 않았고, 제시가 혼란에 빠질까봐 걱정하면서도 승려들에게 호감을 느낀다. 그러던 중 딘의 절친한 친구가 파산하고 죽는 사고가 발생하자, 딘은 마음을 정리하기 위해 제시를 데리고 부탄으로 간다. 한편, 제시는 티벳 승려 노부가 준 '싯달타 왕자의 이야기'라는 책을 통해 싯달타(Siddhartha: 키누 리브스 분)가 왕자로 태어나서 행복한 나날을 보내다가 거리에서 생노병사의 고통을 보고 출가하여 부처님이 되기까지는 '중도'의 진리였으며, 이 세상의 모든 것은 인연에 따라 생겨났다 없어지는 무상한 것이기 때문에 거기에 집착하지 않아야 한다는 것과 연민과 사랑으로 주변을 대해야 한다는 것을 배우게 된다. 부탄에 도착하자 노부 스님은 환생 후보가 모두 세 사람이라며 나머지 환생 후보인 라주(Raju: 라주 랄 분)와 지타(Gita: Greishma Makar Singh 분)를 제시와 만나게 해준다. 사원에서 환생 여부를 확인하는 절차에서 세 아이가 모두 환생한 도제 스님으로 밝혀지는데...

절대왕정이 무르익던 18세기 덴마크. 편집증을 앓고 있는 왕 크리스티안7세를 치료하기 위해 고용된 독일인 의사 요한은 뛰어난 언변과 어린 왕과 왕비를 감싸주는 포용력으로 그들의 신임을 얻어 나랏일에 참여를 하게 된다. 시대에 걸맞지 않은 자유로운 사상과 파격적인 개혁법안으로 귀족들의 견제를 받게 되지만 그런 자유로운 사상이 왕비 캐롤라인의 생각과도 맞닿아 둘은 점점 가까워지며, 급기야는 비밀스러운 만남을 갖게 된다. 자신들의 이익에 침해하는 법안을 제안하는 요한을 못마땅하게 본 귀족들에 의해 둘의 스캔들이 발각 되고 결국 요한은 재판에 회부된다.

An American WWI vet undertakes a spiritual quest that takes him from Paris to Nepal to the Himalayas and back to his hometown. Upon his return, he discovers he is not the only one who has changed.

During the Civil War in 17th-Century England, a small group of deserters flee from a raging battle through an overgrown field. They are captured by an alchemist, who forces the group to aid him in his search to find a hidden treasure that he believes is buried in the field. Crossing a vast mushroom circle, which provides their first meal, the group quickly descend into a chaos of arguments, fighting and paranoia, and, as it becomes clear that the treasure might be something other than gold, they slowly become victim to the terrifying energies trapped inside the field.

서정적인 선율 속에서 뛰어다니는 세 남매를 보여주며 시작되는 이 영화는 19세기 이탈리아의 대표적인 낭만주의 시인 자코모 레오파르디의 삶을 소재로 한다. 엄격한 아버지의 교육 현장을 반영하는 초반부는 시대상을그대로 재현한 그림 같은 샷들로 구성되며, 전체적으로 19세기의 텍스처를 그대로 살린 실내 조명과 색감은 숭고미를 자아낼 정도로 감동적이다. 구속된 삶을 살았던 고향 레카나티에서부터 실연을 겪는 피렌체, 마지막 거처였던 나폴리에 이르기까지 실제 시인의 여정을 따라가다 보면 신체적 결함으로 인해 사랑과 동시에 죽음을 떠올려야만 했던 그의 시 세계에 한 발짝 더 가까이 다가갈 수 있다. 레오파르디 역의 엘리오 제르마노의 연기는 그야말로 타의 추종을 불허하며, 시를 읊으며 대단원을 장식하는 마지막 샷은 형언하기 힘든 감동을 준다. 모든 도서관 장면들은 실제 레오파르디가 작업했던 곳에서 촬영되었다고 한다.
