시놉시스
잭(Dr. Jack MacKee: 윌리암 허트 분)은 환자들에게는 다소 냉혹하게 대하는 성공한 외과의사. 그는 남의 살을 찢는데에는 감정이입 따위는 필요치 않다고 잘라 말하곤 했는데, 그러다 자신이 후두암에 걸렸다는 사실을 알자 그것을 인정하지 않으려 한다. 잭이 참을 수 없는 건 죽음이 임박했다는 불행보다 의사와 간호원들의 불친절함이었다. 환자들을 대하는 병원측의 무신경함에 분통을 터트리던 잭은 뇌종양에 걸린 처녀 준(June Ellis: 엘리자베스 퍼킨스 분)을 만나면서 비로소 산다는 것의 의미를 배우기 시작한다. 암세포에 생명을 침식당하고 있다는 사실이 믿기지 않을 만큼 청아하게 빛나는 준과의 우정은 잭에게 또다른 기쁨을 안겨준다. 그리고 그러한 준이 죽었을 때 잭은 이전의 그를 찾아볼 수 없을만치 삶을 사랑하는 사람이 되어있었다. 저녁 어스름이 내려앉은 강가에서 죽음의 공포를 잊고 춤을 추던 잭과 준의 웃음소리가 오래도록 사라지지 않는다.
