어릴 적부터 비어트릭스 포터의 그림책을 읽으면서 언어의 아름다움을 깨닫고 천재적이지만 인간미 없고 냉정하기 짝이 없는 중년 학자가 된다. 주인공 비비안 베어링은 너무 똑똑한 사람이었다. 그녀의 똑똑함은 단순한 지능지수에 대한 기술 이상의 것이었으며, 그녀는 난소암 말기 환자로 실험적인 약물 치료를 받고 있는 중이었고 그녀의 몸을 뒤틀며 괴롭히는 것은 적인 암세포가 아니라 그녀의 암을 치유하기 위한 약물인 것을 알게 되면서 좌절을 맛보게 된다. 지금까지 영문학자로서 책을 연구하고 가르치던 사람이 이제는 자신이 책이 되어 암전문가들과 의대생에게 연구과제가 된 입장이 되어 반전을 일으키게 된다. 매정한 인물이 세상을 향해 마음을 활짝 열어도 보았지만 세상은 그렇게 만만치가 않았다. 오히려 그녀에게 난소암과 그로 인해 고통 받는 그녀의 육체는 평생을 연구해 왔던 주제가 육화되어 나타나는 것이다. 그녀도 다른 사람들처럼 고통 받고 두려워하며 간호사 수지와의 관계를 통해 보다 단순하고 소박한 인간적 감정의 가치를 재인식하지만, 그러는 동안에도 그녀의 두뇌는 그녀가 마주친 형이상학적 패러독스를 무시할 만큼 '위트'를 잃지 않는데...

When the eternal bachelor Sir Lancelot injures his back and falls in love with his physiotherapist Iris Marchant, he becomes very distressed and turns to Simon for help. Simon, who now is a senior doctor at fictional Hampden Cross Hospital and hopelessly in love with aspiring actress Delia, sends him to a nature cure clinic in a vain attempt to help him lose weight, but Sir Lancelot can't get Iris off his mind and has her followed, first by a private investigator and eventually by himself. When he finally proposes, she rejects him and marries an old army major, which distresses Sir Lancelot even more.
