아파치의 손에 길러진 존 러셀(John Russell: 폴 뉴만 분)은 옴브레라는 이름으로 더 많이 알려져 있다. 어느 날 러셀은 역마차를 타고 아리조나로 향하게 되는데 그 마차에는 마차를 모는 헨리 멘데스(Mendez: 마틴 발삼 분)와 인디안 보호구역의 대리인인 페이버 박사(Alexander Faver: 프레데릭 마치 분), 그의 부인 오드라(Audra Favor: 바바라 러시 분), 그리고 거친 인생을 산 제시(Jessie: 다이안 시렌토 분)라는 여인, 나이 어린 부부 빌리(Billy Lee Blake: 피터 레이저 분)와 그의 아내 도리스(Doris: 마가렛 블레이 분), 그리고 승객으로 위장한 악당 그라임즈(Cicero Grimes: 리차드 분 분)가 함께 타고 있었다. 여행 중 그들이 탄 마차는 마을 보안관이 가세한 강도 일당에게 털리고, 인디언을 속여 부정하게 모든 돈을 가지고 도망을 가려던 페이버 박사의 부인인 오드라가 납치된다. 악당들이 모든 것을 빼앗고 떠나는 순간 러셀은 악당 중 보안관과 돈 가방을 든 두 명을 쏘고 산 속으로 동행인들과 함께 숨어든다.
1955년에 남겨진 마티는 박사의 흔적을 찾는다. 브라운 박사가 1855년으로 갔음을 알게 되고, 폐광 속에 숨겨져 있던 드로리안을 찾아낸다. 1855년의 서부에 도착한 마티는 드로리안의 고장으로 곤경에 빠지지만, 맥플라이 가문의 선조인 세이머스와 매기 부부의 도움을 받고 박사도 만난다. 고장 난 드로리안으로 시간 여행을 하기위해서는 그에 달하는 속도가 유지되어야 하고, 박사와 마티는 그 속도를 얻기 위해 기관차를 이용할 위험한 계획을 세운다. 하지만 박사는 여교사인 클라라와 사랑에 빠져서 그 시대에 남고 싶어한다.
호빗이라 불리우는 난장이 종족 중의 한 명인 프로도는 자신의 삼촌에게서 우연히 절대 반지를 물려받게 되고, 마법사 간달프를 통해서 절대반지가 사우론의 손에 들어가면 악의 세력이 세상을 지배하게 된다는 것을 알게 된다. 하지만 절대반지를 영원히 파괴할 수 있는 유일한 방법은 반지가 만들어진 불의 산의 용암에 그것을 던져 넣는 길 뿐이다. 마침내 프로도와 그의 친구들, 엘프족인 레골라스, 난장이족 김리, 두명의 인간 전사 아라곤과 보로미르, 그리고 마법사 간달프로 구성된 반지 원정대가 길고도 험난한 여정을 떠나게 되는데...

The officials will run a race to pick the winner, and the Banton Brothers sabotage Bill's stage.
