자유의 통역사 (2021)

1995년 세르비아군에 쫓기던 보스니아인들이 UN 캠프로 피신을 한다. UN군 통역관 아이다는 남편과 아들이 캠프 안으로 들어오지 못한 상태임을 알게 된다. 그들을 살리기 위해 동분서주한 끝에 무사히 캠프로 들어오지만 진짜 문제가 벌어진다. UN군은 보스니아인을 해치지 않겠다는 약속을 믿고 세르비아군을 캠프로 진입시킨다. 세르비아군은 약속과 달리 보스니아 남자들을 따로 분류해서 어딘가로 끌고간다. 아이다는 남편과 아들을 살리기 위해 다시한번 안간힘을 쓴다. 발칸반도에서 벌어진 인종학살은 상상조차 힘든 일이지만 실제 있었던 사건이고 그런 만큼 사건의 진상을 파악하는 것은 중요하다.

이념적으로 검열되고 문화적으로 고립된 1980년대의 공산주의 국가, 루마니아에서 철의 장막 바깥의 삶에 대한 모든 이미지는 단절되었으며, TV는 프로파간다 프로그램으로 제한되어 있었다. 칙칙한 콘크리트 벽돌들로부터 식량 배급 대기줄에 이르기까지, 정부의 감시는 사람들을 공포에 떨게 만들며 그들의 이념 밖으로 한 걸음 내딪는 것을 금지시 해왔다. 그러나 모두가 볼 수 있는 자유로운 세상으로 들어설 수 있는 단 하나의 창이 있었다. 1980년대 중반 몇 천편의 헐리우드 영화들은 루마니아에 순조롭게 밀수되었다. 이 영화들은 루마니아에서 자유의 상징이 된 한 용기있는 여성 번역가에 의해 더빙되었다. 모든 아이들은 척 노리스와 장 클로드 반담 같은 액션 영웅들의 겁없는 이야기, 그리고 무엇보다 호화로운 소품과 배경에 매혹되었다. 루마니아 국민들은 거기서 처음으로 금지시되었던 것을 보았다. 음식이 가득 쌓여 있는 슈퍼마켓, 풍요로움의 과시, 최신 패션, 좋은 자동차, 그리고 무엇보다도 자유를. Amélie, a young Belgian woman, having spent her childhood in Japan, decides to return to live there and tries to integrate in the Japanese society. She is determined to be a "real Japanese" before her year contract runs out, though it precisely this determination that is incompatable with Japanese humility. Though she is hired for a choice position as a translator at an import/export firm, her inability to understand Japanese cultural norms results in increasingly humiliating demotions. Though Amelie secretly adulates her, her immediate supervisor takes sadistic pleasure in belittling her all along. She finally manages to break Amelie's will by making her the bathroom attendant, and is delighted when Amelie tells her the she will not renew her contract. Amelie realizes that she is finally a real Japanese when she enters the company president's office "with fear and trembling," which could only be possible because her determination was broken by Miss Fubuki's systematic torture.

소설가이자 대학교수인 톰 릭스는 제자와의 스캔들로 학교에서 추방당하고 아내와 딸마저 등을 돌린다. 접근금지 명령을 받은 톰은 딸을 만나기 위해 무작정 파리를 찾는다. 멀리서나마 딸을 볼 수 있다는 기대감으로 행복해하던 것도 잠시 파리에 도착하자마자 모든 소지품을 도둑맞게 되고 불법 이민자들이 사는 누추한 호텔에서 생활하게 된다. 호텔 주인의 도움으로 미스터리한 야간 경비 일을 얻게 되지만 힘든 일상은 계속 반복되고 절망감과 고독에 휩싸인 채 오직 소설을 쓰겠다는 집념으로 하루하루를 버티는 톰. 어느 날 예술가들이 모이는 살롱의 파티에 참석하게 된 톰은 관능적이면서 지적인 매력을 발산하는 여인 마르짓을 만나게 된다. 파리 5구에 위치한 마르짓의 집에서 다시 만난 두 사람은 사랑을 나누게 되고 절망에 내몰린 자신의 이야기를 들어주며 위로해 주는 마르짓에게 깊게 빠져드는 톰. 오후 4시, 마르짓을 만나기 위해 그녀의 아파트를 찾던 톰은 어느 순간 자신 주변에 이상한 일들이 벌어지고 있다는 사실을 느끼게 된다. 협박하던 옆 방 건달이 끔찍한 시체로 발견되자 살인 용의자가 되어 경찰에게 검거된 톰은 마르짓에 대한 놀라운 사실을 알게 되는데... 매일 오후 4시, 나와의 약속을 지키면 내가 평생 당신을 지켜줄게!

2000년, 사미는 호주 시드니 올림픽에서 시리아 팀의 아랍어-영어 통역가로 활동했다. 하지만 통역 도중 벌어진 말실수로 정치적 난민이 되어 호주에 머물며 망명 생활을 하게 된다. 2011년, 시리아 혁명이 시작되고 사미의 형이 체포되자, 사미는 모든 위험을 무릅쓰고 형을 찾으러 시리아로 돌아가려 한다.
