대만 뉴웨이브를 대표하는 차이 밍량 감독의 신작. 아버지와 두 남매는 타이페이 외곽에 있는 숲과 하천 그리고 비 내리는 거리를 떠돌아다닌다. 낮이면 고급 아파트를 홍보하는 인간광고판으로 거리에 서 있는 아버지. 그 동안 아이들은 슈퍼마켓과 백화점을 돌아다니며 시식코너를 이용해 끼니를 때운다. 밤이 되면 가족은 버려진 빈 건물에 들어가 밤을 보내는 일상을 반복한다. 임시거처로 머무는 건물의 벽화에 마음을 빼앗긴 아버지. 그에게 한 여성이 다가온다. 이미지만으로 서사를 끌어가는 경지와 형식적인 새로움. 사라져가는 공간에 대한 비애와 차가운 도시에서 살아가는 고독한 인간에 대한 연민. 응시와 느림의 미학이 끌어내는 경이로운 순간까지. 차이 밍량 감독의 새로운 도전은 계속 진화하고 있다. 영화는 이제는 문을 닫은 오래된 극장에서 아련한 불빛으로 시작한다. 차이밍량의 〈안녕, 용문객잔〉의 영감이 되었던 이 극장은 어쩌면 차이밍량의 영화세계가 시작한 곳인지 모른다. 대만 뉴웨이브를 대표하는 챠이밍량 감독은 말레이시아에서 태어나 성장했다. 고향으로 돌아간 차이밍량은 어린 시절 영화에 대한 꿈을 키웠던 극장을 찾는다. 그러나 극장뿐만 아니라 그의 발길이 찾는 모든 곳이 그의 영화의 고향인 듯 하다. 영화에서 연극, 그리고 장치예술 등 자신의 영역을 확장시켜 온 차이밍량의 이 다양한 시도는 어쩌면 그가 어린 시절 경험했던 극장에서의 경험을 재현하려는 노력의 연장선상에 있는지 모른다. 관객과의 소통은 단순히 영화 자체로 이루어지는 것이 아니라 그 영화가 보여지는 장소와 그 순간이 제공하는 요소의 총체적 경험을 통해서 이루어지는 것이라는 믿음의 발현일 것이다. 〈지나간 현재〉는 향수가 깃든 과거의 기억을 끄집어내 여전히 영화로 소통할 방법을 찾고 있는 차이밍량의 현재를 연결시키며 여전히 생동하는 그의 영화에 대한 열정을 이야기한다. A-Chuan, a quiet 30-year-old man working as a chef in a Japanese restaurant, collapses suddenly and is rushed to a hospital. His colleagues send him to his father, who resides in the mountains. While there, A-Chuan becomes immobile: he won’t speak, eat or even go to the toilet on his own. One day his father returns from work only to find A-Chuan sitting in the corner with his daughter lying dead in a pool of blood. In an unfamiliar, eerily calm voice, A-Chuan says, “I saw this body was empty, so I moved in.

타이완의 한 영화감독이 살로메의 신화를 바탕으로 한 영화를 만들려고 한다. 그러나 영화제작이 시작되자마자 감독의 모친이 죽게 되고, 그는 이승을 떠나기 싫어하는 엄마의 혼령이 깃든 아파트에서 깊은 잠에 빠진다.

대사를 극도로 배제한 채, 외로움의 치명적인 상처에 대해 말하고 있는 차이 밍량의 신작. 말레이시아의 쿠알라룸푸르. 이주노동자 라왕은 불랑배들에게 얻어맞아 거리에 쓰러져 있는 노숙자를 자신의 숙소로 데려가 극진한 간호를 한다. 근처 커피숍의 웨이트리스는 식물인간이 된 여주인의 아들을 돌봐야 한다. 몸이 회복된 노숙자는 우연히 웨이트리스를 만나 가까워지지만, 라왕은 절망에 빠진다. 도시를 잠식한 외로움을 드러내는 차이 밍량의 치밀한 연출이 더욱 정교해졌으며, 리 캉생 또한 생애 최고의 연기를 펼쳐보인다.

대만은 극심한 가뭄으로 버썩버썩 말라간다. 그리고 두개의 메마른 영혼이 있다. 싱차이는 공중화장실에서 몰래 물을 길어나르고, 포르노 배우인 샤오캉은 야밤에 아파트 옥상 물탱크에서 시원하게 샤워를 즐긴다. 두 사람은 사랑에 빠지고, 서로 상대가 갈증을 채워줄 수 있을지도 모른다는 기대를 품는다. 하지만 싱차이는 샤오캉이 포르노 배우라는 사실을 전혀 알지 못한다. 싱차이는 샤오캉과 사랑을 나누고 싶은 욕망에 불타지만 샤오캉은 그녀를 안아주지 않는다. 결국 그녀는 샤오캉이 포르노를 찍는 현장에서 연기하는 그를 보게되고… 그리고 이어지는 충격적인 반전!!!

Dajun still lives with his father, who dates and plans to marry a ditsy starlet. The boy's mother is a flight stewardess, hence often away, and so Dajun's chubby cousin Yifen is often hired in as a child-minder. The relationship between Dajun and Yifen is, to say the least, abrasive, and Yifen bitterly resents being imposed on--especially when it seems that her own family is keen to get rid of her.

낡고 오래된 복화극장은 내일이면 문을 닫을 예정이며, 그 마지막 상영작으로 호금전 감독의 <용문객잔>을 상영하고 있다. 쏟아지는 폭우를 뚫고 극장에 모인 관객 중에는 동성애 파트너를 찾는 젊은 일본 남자, 야한 옷차림으로 연신 피스타치오를 까먹는 젊은 여자, 그리고 손자의 손을 잡고 온 노인 마오티엔이 있다. <용문객잔>은 이 노인의 배우 데뷔작이었지만 극장의 다른 이들은 그 사정을 알 리 없다. 사람인지 유령인지 알 수 없는 이들이 객석과 복도, 화장실을 떠도는 가운데 그 동안 이 극장을 지켜온 두 사람, 다리를 저는 여자 매표원과 젊은 영사기사 역시 마지막까지 서로를 스쳐갈 뿐이다.

A grandmother is looking for her grandson, a teenager for his grandfather.

The film follows Robinson, a very succesfull real estate broker, who lives in a modern hotel in Taipei. But all the success also hides a lonely man, whose relations are becoming distant, including friends and lovers; Robinson's dream is the Crusoe, an island on the Caribbean, which he wants to try purchase.

A young woman wandering around meets a young man going to a casting call for a pornographic film.

노상에서 시계를 팔아 살아가는 이강생과 그의 어머니, 그리고 파리에서 외로운 일상을 보내는 젊은 여인이 영화의 세 축을 형성한다. 이강생은 자신이 차고 있던 시계를 사 간 한 여인에게 왠지 모를 연모를 품지만 그녀는 파리로 여행을 떠나버린다. 파리가 대만보다 7시간이 느리다는 사실을 알아낸 이강생은 눈에 보이는 시계마다 파리의 시간으로 고쳐놓는다. 남편과 사별한 이강생의 어머니는 죽은 자의 영혼을 달래기 위한 49제에 열을 올린다. 고인이 된 남편을 위해 매일 밥을 차리는가 하면 벌레나 물고기가 남편의 환생이라고 착각하며 산다. 이강생에게 시계를 산 뒤 파리로 떠난 여인은 어울릴 사람 하나 없이 외로운 나날을 보낸다. 극도의 외로움은 우연히 만난 홍콩 여인에 대해 난데없는 동성애를 부추긴다. 이들 모두는 관계의 틀 안에 있지만 동시에 관계 안에서 어떤 의미도 찾지 못하고 있다는 점에서는 일맥상통한다. 거기에는 심리적, 물리적 위안을 삼기 위한 집착만이 존재할 뿐이다. 이강생은 파리의 시간에 집착하며, 어머니는 죽은 남편의 환영에서 빠져 나오지 못한다. 그 집착은 또한 고통을 재생산한다.

샤오강(이강생)은 부모와 함께 타이페이의 아파트에서 살고 있다. 포르노 비디오업자를 애인으로 갖고 있는 어머니(시아오 링 루)는 집에 들어오면 방에 들어앉아 포르노 비디오만 본다. 퇴직 후 무료한 나날을 보내는 아버지(티엔 미아오)는 게이 사우나를 드나든다. 어느날 샤오강은 길에서 우연히 고교 동창 시앙키를 만나, 그녀가 일하는 영화촬영 현장에 놀러간다. 감독(안 위)은 샤오강에게 시체역을 부탁한다. 촬영이 끝난 후 샤오강은 한 소녀(시앙키 첸)와 섹스를 한다. 다음날 목에 심한 통증을 느낀 샤오강은 약도 발라보고 침도 맞아보지만 원인 모를 통증은 점점 심해만 간다. 그는 아버지의 손에 이끌려 심령술사의 치료를 받으러 태창시로 간다. 호텔에 묵는 동안 아버지는 게이 사우나를 찾아가고 샤오강도 같은 생각을 한다. 두 사람은 어두운 사우나에서 서로를 모른 채 관계를 맺는다. This is a four-part anthology comedy. The themes of four parts are: car, house, body and friendship. The central characters are a plastic surgeon Chen, a nurse, an experienced maid, three energetic teenagers and a young couple. The stingy surgeon Chen treats a car and a man so differently that he could be a perfect example to show how treasonously modern people treat their cars and how indifferently they treat other people. The maid Ying is like a knight on her "iron horse" (a bicycle), fighting in the city. Every day she rushes home after work to wait up for a husband never returns. The new nurse has problem with her colleague because they support different idle. What she also doesn't know is the reason why her brother's girlfriend sends her free lunchbox so often. The truth is that her brother's girlfriend wants to get plastic surgery in the clinic. Almost everyone here is not satisfied with his/her body. Moreover, they try to change their body with quite violent ways.

With a singular voice that distinguishes him from his New Taiwan Cinema contemporaries, Lin Cheng-sheng adds to his brief, but already remarkable, filmography with Sweet Degeneration, his third film in two years. As with A Drifting Life and Murmur of Youth, Lin’s new film delicately unfolds, gradually building to a climax of stunning emotional reverberations. Drawn from a particularly painful episode in the director’s past, Sweet Degeneration delves into the uneasy bonds a brother and sister have with each other and the people around them.

오해와 엇갈림으로 가득한 이틀 동안의 낮과 밤을 통해 대만의 도시적 삶을 신랄한 블랙코미디로 보여 주는 작품. 도시 공무원과 사업가, 광고업자 등 다양한 인물들이 도시의 어둠에서 겪는 일을 그린 영화로 대만 사회의 전통적 가치관과 문화의 퇴락에 대한 에드워드 양의 관심이 투영된 작품이다. 밝고 경쾌한 리듬과 수다스러운 대사를 통해 신세대들의 사랑과 경제, 예술과 종교적인 위선을 보여준다. 타이페이를 위장 도시로 표현하면서, 밝은 면보다는 암울한 면이 더 많은 곳이라는 것을 암시한다.

14살 소년 샤오쓰는 국어 성적이 나쁘다는 이유로 중학교 주간부에서 야간부로 반을 옮기게 되고 ‘소공원’파와 어울려 다닌다. 그러던 중 샤오쓰는 양호실에서 밍이라는 이름의 소녀를 만나게 된다. 소녀는 ‘소공원’파의 보스 허니의 여자로 허니는 샤오밍을 차지하기 위해 경쟁조직인 ‘217’파의 보스를 죽이고 은둔 중이다. 보스의 부재로 통제력을 상실한 ‘소공원’파는 보스 자리를 두고 혼란에 빠지고 돌연 허니가 돌아오게 되면서 ‘소공원’파 내부와 ‘217’파간의 대립이 격해진다. 그리고 밍을 사랑하게 된 샤오쓰도 이들의 싸움에 휘말리게 되는데...
