19世紀の半ば、スコットランドからニュージーランドへ写真結婚で嫁ぐエイダ。旅のお供は娘のフロラと一台のピアノ。エイダは6歳の時から口がきけず、ピアノが彼女の言葉だった。夫のスチュアートはそのピアノを重すぎると浜辺に置き去りにし、原住民に同化している男ベインズの土地と交換してしまう。ベインズはエイダに“ピアノ・レッスン”をしてくれればピアノを返すというが……。

After finding one, he hangs out for a while, fixing himself something to eat, washing laundry or making small repairs in return. He always tries to leave before the owners get back but in one ostensibly empty mansion he meets the abused wife of a rich man and she escapes with him.
