언젠지 알 수 없는 과거, 자신의 아버지를 죽인 젊은이 칸니발이 야생동물들에게 갈갈이 찢기는 형벌을 받게 된다는 이야기. 그리고 전쟁 후, 독일 기업가의 아들 줄리안은 인간관계를 꺼려 자신의 농장에서 돼지를 키우는 이야기. 이렇게 두 개의 이야기로 구성된 작품.

Horrified, he flees Corinth and his supposed parents - only to get into a fight and kill an older man on the road...

붉은 사막에서 공장지대의 회색공장까지 엷은 녹색의 코트를 걸친 모니카 비티가 혼자 걸어간다. 공장의 굴뚝에서는 노란 빛을 띤 연기가 나부낀다. 영화는 이렇게 한 여자의 모습으로부터 시작된다. 고도성장시대의 살벌한 이탈리아의 공업도시에서 공장 기사인 남편 및 아들과 셋이 살아가는 쥴리아나(모니카 비티 분)는 자동차 사고를 당해 입원해있다 퇴원한 뒤로 남편과의 관계가 소원해지고 정신이 불안정해져 노이로제 상태에 빠져들게 된다. 가족들의 존재도 그녀의 가슴에 괴어 있는 불안을 완화시켜주지는 못한다. 노이로제 증상으로 인한 그녀의 감정적이고 괴팍한 성격은 그녀 주변의 모든 사람들을 고통스럽게 하지만, 정작 그녀 자신은 잘못된 것은 아무것도 없다는 듯 행동한다. 영국인 건축가인 코라도 젤러(리차드 해리스 분)는 이런 그녀를 이해하면서, 그녀의 문제 속으로 빠져들게 된다. 남편의 출장을 계기로 쥴리아나는 코라도와 불륜관계에 빠져들게 되지만, 그녀의 육체적 정신적 고통은 해소되지 않고, 내면 속의 문제가 쉽게 해결되지 않을수록 그녀는 코라도와의 불륜에 몰입해간다.

소규모의 그룹이 요트를 타고 여유로운 일상을 즐기고 있다. 산드로는 건축가로서 지금은 나이가 약간 있다. 그는 약혼녀 안나와 그녀의 여자친구 클라우디아 등과 동행중인데, 안나와 곧 결혼할 예정이다. 안나는 결혼을 앞두고 다소 흔들리는 인상이다. 겉으로는 부족한 것이 없어 보이지만, 실은 이들의 내면은 의미없는 일상과 문명에 황폐한 상태다. 요트가 아이올리스 섬에 이르자, 무인도임을 알고 뭍에 오른다. 그런데 산책길에 나섰던 이들 중에 안나가 돌연 사라져 버린 것을 발견한다. 처음과는 달리 사태는 실종사고로 확인되고, 섬과 주변에 대대적인 수색이 벌어지지만 그녀를 찾지 못한다. 그녀가 완전히 실종된 것을 확인하자, 남은 산드로는 상심하고 클라우디아는 안나에게 다소 냉정했던 산드로를 질책한다. 그러나 이들은 곧 서로에게 끌려 욕망이 이끄는 대로 행동하기 시작하는데...
