日本・トルコ合作映画。壮大なスケールで贈る真実の物語。二つのエピソードで構成。１８９０年、和歌山県串本町沖、トルコの親善使節団を乗せた軍艦エルトゥールル号が座礁して大破、海に投げ出された乗組員５００名以上が暴風雨で命を落とす。そうした過酷な状況下で、地元住民が懸命の救援活動に乗り出す。それから時を経たイラン・イラク戦争中の１９８５年、日本政府は危機的状況を理由にイラン在留邦人の救出を断念。テヘランに残された邦人は300名以上。そんな中、トルコ政府は彼らのためにある行動を取る。国境を越えた真の友情を描く感動作。第３９回日本アカデミー賞において、優秀作品賞と優秀監督賞をはじめとする１０部門で優秀賞を受賞。美術と録音部門は最優秀賞を獲得。
Kate Soffel is married to a prison warden in Pittsburgh, and is the mother of their four children. Ed Biddle is a convicted murderer awaiting execution on death row with his brother Jack. 幕末。東北の小藩である海坂藩の平侍であった片桐宗蔵は、母と妹の志乃、女中のきえと貧しくも平穏な日々を送っていた。やがて母が亡くなり、志乃ときえは嫁入りしていった。ある雪の日、宗蔵ときえは３年ぶりに町で再会するが、きえのやつれた表情に宗蔵は胸を痛める。きえが嫁ぎ先で酷い扱いを受け寝込んでいることを知った彼は自宅へ連れ帰り、回復したきえと共に暮らし始める。そんな時、藩に大事件が起きた。宗蔵と同じく藩の剣術指南役・戸田寛斎の門下生だった狭間弥市郎が謀反を企んだ罪で囚われ、さらに山奥の牢を破って逃げ出したのだ。宗蔵は、逃亡した弥市郎を斬るよう家老に命じられる。
